Jean Smerdon, age 75 and a longtime resident of Taylor, passed away early Saturday morning at Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton.
Her husband, William J. Smerdon, preceded her in death on February 15, 1999. Born in Old Forge on January 6, 1936, daughter of the late Frank and Stella Cieszkowicz Jarosloski, Jean was a graduate of Old Forge High School. A member of the Lady Garment Workers’ Union, she worked as an inspector for the former Vermont Sportsware in Taylor prior to her retirement. A devoted member of St. Ann’s Basilica, she was also a member of the Basilica Women. An avid casino goer, she also enjoyed shopping on Sundays with her dear friend, Ann Hallberg.
She is survived by her sister, Eleanor Ogonosky and husband Joseph, and cousins including Evelyn and Ira Goosay, Charles and Carol Orloski and Florence Morwcza, all of Taylor.
Her brother, John Jarosloski, also preceded her in death.
Her family would like to thank the staffs of both Hospice Community Care and Allied Skilled Nursing for making it more comfortable for Jean over the past several months.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00AM in St. Ann’s Basilica, West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Francis Landry, C.P., Pastor.
Private interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 6-8:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jean’s name to St. Ann’s Basilica (c/o 1233 St. Ann Street, Scranton, 18504).
