Clarence “Bubbie” Eugene Hughes, Sr., age 85, of Moosic, passed away Monday morning under the care of Community Medical Center’s VNA Hospice Unit, Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Decker Hughes. She passed away on June 26, 1989. Born in Chinchilla on May 15, 1923, son of the late Oran David and Mabel DePew Hughes, Clarence was educated in Greenwood Schools. He was a Naval veteran of WWII. A coal miner, an excavator, a truck driver and a mechanic, prior to retirement he had worked for Benjamin’s Garage. He was a member of the Moosic Alliance Church and the U.S. Naval Armed Guard. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, relative and friend, Bubbie will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his twelve children, seven daughters; Marion Nalaschi of Old Forge, Joan Kemler of Duryea, Dorothy Marianelli of Old Forge, Barbara Shrader of Taylor, Debra Hughes of Scranton, Donna Maul of Scranton, Jackie Grugnale of Moosic, five sons; Clarence Hughes, Jr. of Old Boston, Willard Hughes and Louis Hughes, both of Moosic, Ronald Hughes of Duryea, and Thomas Hughes of Pittston, four brothers; Willard Hughes, George, Jackie and Jerry Radle, 41 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Also preceding in death were two daughters; Louise Killino and Cathy Fritz, a brother; Oran Hughes, Jr., a sister; Sally Webb, a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Funeral Services by the Rev. Art Tucker will be held on Thursday at 10AM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, followed by Interment at Marcy Cemetery, Duryea. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-8PM at the funeral home.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Taylor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially Tracey, Lynn and Barb, and to the staff of VNA Hospice, and to his special friends April and Jennifer.
