Jean N. Shevlin, age 88, an eight-year resident at Allied Skilled Nursing Center and formerly of 12th Avenue in West Scranton, passed away early Saturday morning. She was preceded in death in 1969 by her husband, James F. Shevlin. Born in Nicholson on February 22, 1920, daughter of the late Nicholas and Nancy Kenopelski Malinko, Jean was voted belle of her senior class at West Scranton High School, Class of 1938. For over 40 years, she worked as a cosmetologist for Scranton Dry Goods before retiring from the Scranton Globe Store. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church and its Society of the Faithful. She always enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, relative and friend, she will be dearly missed.
Surviving are her children, a daughter; Beverly Shaughnessy and husband Paul of Scranton, and two sons; James F. Shevlin and wife Jodi Durham, CT, and Robert Shevlin and wife Ann of Deerfield, NY, a sister; Josephine Kreta of Stratford, CT, ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by brothers; Stanley and Michael Malinko.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street, to be celebrated by Rev. Francis L. Pauselli. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 5-8PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to support the retired IHM Sisters (c/o IHM Sisters Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, 18509).
