Katherine (Kay) McAuliffe, age 77, of Dallas and previously of Scranton and Reading, passed away Monday afternoon at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes Barre. She was preceded in death on March 25, 1962 by her husband, Hubert McAuliffe. Born in Scranton on October 19, 1930, daughter of the late Joseph D. and Florence A. Coughlin, Kay was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1948. From 1967 to 1995, she worked for the American Red Cross. She spent 16 years at the Scranton Chapter serving as the Director of Service to Military Families and Disaster Services and prior to retirement, she worked 12 years at the Reading Chapter as Director of Emergency Services. A former member of the Immaculate Conception, Scranton, she was a current member of St. Therese’s Roman Catholic Church, Shavertown. She was a volunteer for the Blind Association, screening for kindergarten children, and for St. Therese’s tape and prayer ministry. She greatly enjoyed reading and going to lunch with her friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Kit Foley and husband Tom, with whom she resided; a sister, Margaret Murrin of Dallas; a grandson, Patrick Foley; and numerous nieces and nephews in Scranton, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and Arizona, including Mari Murrin of Phoenix, who was like her second daughter.
She was also preceded in death by brothers, Joseph D. and James H.; and a sister, Patricia Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Woman With Children Program (c/o Misericordia University, 301 Lake Street, Dallas, 18612).
Funeral Services will be Saturday with friends being asked to meet directly at St. Therese’s Roman Catholic Church, Davis Street in Dallas, for a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by Rev. Michael Bryant. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-7PM at the Harold C. Snowden Funeral Home, corner of North Memorial Highway and Machell Avenue, Dallas.
