Michael Hreben, a longtime Moosic resident, passed away Thursday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton surrounded by his loving family at the age of 81. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lydia (Ghergo) Hreben. The couple celebrated 59 years of marriage in May.
Born on July 28, 1942 and raised in Scranton, Michael attended the former Scranton Technical High School before serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a proud member of Ironworker Union Local #489, with whom he worked until his retirement.
Michael loved his sports. He was a die-hard fan of the Green Bay Packers, Boston Red Sox and Penn State Nittany Lions, but enjoyed nothing more than attending his grandchildren’s sporting events throughout the years. An avid outdoorsman, he was an active hunter and loved fishing. He was also a familiar face on voting day as he was a longtime Moosic Borough voting poll worker. Dearly loved by family and friends, he’ll forever be missed.
Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Old Forge.
Along with Lydia, he is survived by his loving family including four sons, Michael Hreben of Lancaster, Mark Hreben of Moosic, Matthew Hreben and wife Donne of TN. and Mitchell Hreben of TX.; two grandchildren, Rachel Hreben of Philadelphia and Michael Hreben of FL.; a brother-in-law, Val Ghergo and wife Mary Ellen of Scranton; and dearest cousins, Sandy Hares and family of TX. A brother, Joseph Shea, also preceded Michael in death.
His family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire teams of both Geisinger C.M.C.’s I.C.U. and also the Gift of Life organization for the collective care and compassion given to Michael’s family.
Private arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
Memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital c/o 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
