Joan Marie (Gallagher) Ruane, age 83 and a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away Monday morning at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton after an illness. On December 3, 1999, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 31 years, Francis A. “Pocky” Ruane.
Born on February 8, 1940 and daughter of the late Robert A. and Marie E. (Cawley) Gallagher, Joan was raised in the Green Ridge section of Scranton. Upon marriage and raising her adoring son, Brian, she worked as an accountant for the former Northeastern Bank before working in the call center for JCPenny for over 20 years, prior to her well-deserved retirement.
A shopaholic who never met a store she didn’t like, Joan was also a champion bowler as a fixture in the local bowling circuit, namely Green Ridge Lanes.
She possessed a child-like joy and zest for life and she never passed up a good time. Her smile will never be forgotten. Above all else came her loving for her family, especially her grandsons and nieces and nephews, who will dearly miss Joan forever.
She is survived by her loving family, including son and caregiver, Brian Ruane and wife Dr. Pamela Ruane and grandsons, Mihaly and Avery Ruane, all of Scranton; sisters-in-law, Ann Scanlon of Scranton and Marilyn Ruane of Chinchilla; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother, James Gallagher, also preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th, at St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Avenue in Scranton, to be celebrated by Monsignor Neil J. Van Loon V.F., Pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Family and friends wishing to pay respects are invited to at the church from 10:00 AM until Mass. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
