Gary Biel, Sr., age 64, of the Tripps Park section of West Scranton, passed away Monday at home. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife whom he loved more than anything, Susan Ann (Goonan) Biel. Wed on February 27, 1982, the couple recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.
A lifelong resident of Scranton, Gary was born on August 10, 1956, and was the son of the late Fred and Mae (Smith) Biel. A graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1976, he first began working at the former Scranton Lace Company, where he would meet his future wife. Serving as a driver for several employers, he last worked for Entenmann’s Baked Goods from where he would retire. He loved driving, so naturally even after his retirement he remained on the road as a part-time limousine and bus driver.
Gary enjoyed driving, anywhere and everywhere, and he certainly wouldn’t pass up a good TV show. Above all else however was his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, adoring brother and uncle and a “papi” to his pride and joy grandchildren. He’ll never be forgotten and always missed.
Along with his wife, he is also survived by his by his loving family, sons Gary Biel, Jr. and companion Katie Walsh of Scranton and Dr. Jesse Biel and wife Dr. Alecia of Hilliard, Ohio; grandchildren, Penelope and Liam Biel; siblings, Dorothy (Dottie) Minelli and husband Frank of Clarks Summit, Wayne Biel and wife Cheryl of Pittston, Fred Biel of Scranton, Arthur Neidich and wife Kamlin of TX., and Rich Loney of Scranton, whom Gary considered a brother; many nieces and nephews, including his great nephew and godson, Parker Swiegart; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Biel. A brother, Thomas Biel, also preceded him in death.
A celebration of Gary’s life to be conducted by Rev. Dr. Michael Shambora is set for Monday at 2:00 PM at The Banks – a waterfront venue, 304 Kennedy Blvd., Pittston. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday from noon until services at the venue.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
