Frank Janus, age 88, of Clarks Summit died Saturday morning in the VNA Hospice Unit at the Moses Taylor Hospital.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Matilda Mirtz.
Born on October 24, 1917 in Avoca he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Czernik Janus.He has resided in Clarks Summit, at the Willowbrook, Edella Road, the past two years.He was educated in Taylor Schools.Frank joined the Army in 1942. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 after serving our country as a baker and mess sergeant. While serving our Country he received the Good Conduct Medal, The Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze Service Star, the American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze star, and the World War II Victory Medal.Returning home from the war, he returned to his old job at Biesecker’s Bakery in South Side and married Matilda.In 1953 he decided he needed a change and he and Matilda moved to Levittown to one of the new developments. They became Levittowners. He and Matilda made a wonderful life there.He delivered Bond Bread home to home and after the grocery stores popped up, the need for home delivery was no more.He landed a job delivering milk to local schools.After a few years, he quit and got a job at Sterling Drugs where Matilda worked.After retiring he took a part-time job at a local gas station.At the age of 84 his final job of"crossing guard" was halted by the illness of his wife.He and Matilda returned to the area to be with his family.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church on Emilie Road in Levittown.While there he served as Head Usher and Deacon.If ever there was a person in need, Frank was always there, collecting food for the unfortunate, taking someone to the doctor and always, always attending church on Sunday.He was also a Prince of the Royal Secret 32, Brother of the Ancient Accepted Scottich Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, Crescent Shriners and faithful supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
He loved working in the yard, playing pinochle and watching the Philadelphia Phillys.
Baseball was his all time favorite hobby and his dream as a young boy was to play ball!!!
The Family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at The Willowbrook for the love and care that was given to Frank while he resided there.To Rev. Davis who made him feel spriritual again.He so enjoyed his Wednesday afternoons with Pastor and the ladies.
He is survived by a brother Edward in Lindwood, New Jersey and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a great great niece.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Dyson and Elinore Janus.
The funeral will be Wednesday with services at 10:30 A.M. in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home 517 North Main Street in Old Forge by the Rev. Arthur W. Davis, Retired United Methodist Minister. Interment will be at Abington Hills Cemetery in Clarks Summit.Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 9:30 A.M. until service time.
