William T. Quinlan, 86, of Moosic, died Friday morning in Mercy Hospital. His wife is Romaine Rosencrans Quinlan. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary Dec. 28th.
Born on Nov. 30, 1919, in Scranton, son of the late Thomas and Sadie Carroll Quinlan, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1938, and resided in Moosic for the past 50 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Prior to retirement in 1973, he was employed by Railway Express for 35 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Avoca. He was a member of the board of directors at the Moosic Youth Center, served as supervisor and had been affiliated with the center since its inception in 1955. He was a former member of the Lions Club. He was an officer and manager of the Moosic Little League and Teener League for more than 30 years. He also managed baseball teams in Moosic and the West Scranton Legion.
He served as the recreation coordinator for Moosic Borough for 21 years. Because of his dedication and commitment to the youth of his community, a sports complex in the borough was named for him. He helped organize the Moosic Borough Run.
He was also a recipient of the American Legion Award for promoting youth activities, was the first recipient of the Tom Burdett Award from Little League District 17 and was inducted into the Chic Feldman Foundation Hall of Fame in 1993.
An avid baseball fan, he and his wife were nightly fixtures at the complex in South Scranton, as well as many other fields of play. Surely there are few who have grown up in Moosic who did not know Mr. Quinlan.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Francis; and three sisters, Latitia Sheridan and twins Mary Cawley and Ann Price.
The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Mary’s Church, Hawthorne Street, Avoca, to be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph G. Elston, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
