Mae Biel, R.N., 82, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Saturday in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the wife of Fred Biel, who died in 1980.
Born June 8, 1933 in Scranton, Mae was educated in Scranton schools and was a registered nurse who pioneered the idea of personal healthcare in the area. Known for her generosity and having a big heart, she gave so much of her time and energy to providing for the homeless, mentally challenged and elderly. Through her endeavors, many of these people found care, comfort and love that was true and genuine. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Guy Fasciana and his staff for the wonderful care and also to Amanda Maxwell, Tyler Sweigart and Marina Morris for all the care, love and support shown to Mae.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Minelli and husband, Frank, Clarks Summit; sons, Wayne Biel and wife, Chery, Pittston; Fred Biel, Scranton; Gary Biel and wife, Susan, Scranton; Thomas Biel and wife, Phyllis, Florida; Rich Loney, Scranton; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded her in death by her sister, Shirley Turnamby; and brother, Robert Secor.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Scott Hall, officiating. Interment to follow in Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton.
Relative and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
