Marion Mayer, age 97, of West Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit of Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. She is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Robert Mayer. The couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on October 18th. Born in New York City, N.Y., on June 22, 1916, daughter of the late George and Nellie Gillespie Barrett, Marion was a graduate of the former Holy Rosary High School in North Scranton. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a comptometer operator for the A & P Market Offices. Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church. Also a member of the VFW Post #7069, she was an excellent cook whose favorite pastime was reading. She enjoyed spending time with her husband at her vacation home in Fort Myers, Florida. Loved by many, she will be dearly missed.
She is also survived by a son-in-law, Tony Turchetti of Camp Hill; two grandchildren, Joseph Turchetti and wife Carla and Leslie Turchetti and husband Matthew Palombaro; three great-granddaughters, Sophie, Francesca and Gabriella Turchetti; sisters-in-law, Pauline Fallon and Eileen Bowen, both of Scranton, Madelyn Purcell of Clarks Summit and Eleanor Anderson of Bethlehem; a brother-in-law, Donald Mayer; and many nieces and nephews.
Her first husband, Joseph Lloyd; her daughter, Carol Turchetti; a sister, Helen Malley; and a brother, William Barrett, also preceded her in death.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Kurt Moran and his staff along with her longtime friends, Archy and Mary Lil, for their collective care, love and support.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday at 11:00AM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street in West Scranton. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Private viewing will be held at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marion’s name to the Compassionate Care Hospice Memorial Fund, 960 North Main Avenue, Scranton, 18508.
