Rev. Stanley Gleason (Pop Pop), age 83, of Moosic, died Thursday morning in the VNA Hospice Unit of Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Aileen Grace Gleason. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 6th. Born in West Scranton on January 30, 1930, son of the late John H. and Stella Morgan Gleason, Stanley attended West Scranton High School and Johnson Technical School. A skilled woodworker, in 1958 he began the Gleason Woodworking business in West Scranton. He eventually moved the business to Moosic while renaming it Gleason Kitchens, Inc. a business he owned and operated until 1991. He then opened Pop Pop’s Workshoppe which he ran until his retirement.
A man of great faith in prayer and Jesus Christ, he graduated from Liberty University’s correspondence school and became an ordained minister before eventually becoming the full-time Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church in North Scranton for 18 years. Very active in many organizations, he was the former Chairman of Board for the Moosic Chamber of Commerce and a board member at the Taylor Nursing Home. He formerly served as Chairman of the Board for the Youth for Christ, and was a member of both the Christian Businessmen’s’ Association and the St. David’s Society. He was a faithful member of the Jackson Street Baptist Church in West Scranton.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, his legacy is one of a masterful woodworker with an excellent work ethic whose life was navigated by Jesus Christ.
He is also survived by two sons, John Gleason and wife Nancy of Moosic, and David Gleason and wife Leslie of Waverly; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
A brother, Edward Gleason, and a sister, Eleanor Hughes, also preceded him in death.
His family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all of the doctors and staff who had given him such amazing care throughout his illnesses, especially to both VNA and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
A celebration of Stanley’s life is scheduled for Monday at 6:00PM in the Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson Street in West Scranton with a reception to follow.
Public viewing for relatives and friends will be held on Sunday from noon until 3:00PM in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Private graveside services will be conducted for the family by Rev. Kory Houser.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jackson St. Baptist Church or Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
