Ira Joseph Fenton, age 82, a resident of Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylor and formerly of Scranton, passed away Friday morning. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Evans Fenton. Wed on August 11, 1951, the couple were married for 61 years. Born in McKeesport, on June 4, 1930, son of the late William and Miraha Bainbridge Fenton, Ira was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1949. For twenty years, he worked for the United Gilsonite Lab in Dunmore. As a paint salesman, he was employed by Sears Roebuck and Co. for thirty years. Prior to his retirement, he was a co-owner and operator of Fenton Submarines of Scranton and Old Forge. A former member of the Church of Good Shepard in Scranton, he was also a proud member of the Union Lodge No. 291 for over fifty years. A loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, Ira will be dearly missed by all of those who loved him.
He is survived by three sons, Wayne Fenton and companion Daniel Campion, Gary Fenton and Jennifer, and John Fenton, all of Scranton; three grandchildren and one great-grandson; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Georgie Dudek of Clarks Summit; a dear family friend, Katherine Sury of Scranton; a dear neighbor and friend, Sammy Sandy of Scranton; and a loving godchild, Roberta Fenton Deprimo of Taylor.
Also preceding in death was a son, Bruce William Fenton; brothers, William and Russell Fenton; sisters, Mary Hoffman, Madeline Mahoney and Betty Leyshon.
His family would like to bestow their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Darlene Dunay and the staff of the Commonwealth Hospice Unit for all of their care and compassion.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at noon at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, to be conducted by the Rev. James A. Wert. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Dunmore.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 5-8:00PM at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 7:30PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ira’s name to the Union Lodge No. 291, Masonic Temple, 420 North Washington Avenue, Scranton, 18503.
