Mary Catherine Hape, age 82 and a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Saturday under Commonwealth Hospice Care at Regional Hospital in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hape, on October 21, 1975. Born on May 1, 1930, daughter of the late William and Tessie Demkowich, Mary Catherine was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1948. She had devoted her life to her family, especially her greatest joys, her children and grandchildren.
An extraordinary woman and an amazing spirit, Mary Catherine was welcomed into heaven on Saturday evening, passing away surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy illness. God now has her in his arms, however she’ll forever remain in her family’s hearts.
She is survived by her four children, her son and caregiver, William, with whom she resided; her daughters, Karen Salzmann and husband Danny, Gretchen Hosko and husband Jeff, and Christine Hape; her sister, Jeanne Thomas; her sisters-in-law, June Demko, who was also her best friend, and Barbara Demkowich; beloved grandchildren, Jamie Hape and companion Mike Ferri, whom she adored, Danny, Tessa and Taylor Salzmann, and Dillon and Natasha Hosko; and nieces and nephews, Steven, David, John, Beverly, Andrew, Janice, Walter, Laurie and Allen.
Also preceding in death were brothers, Anthony, Joseph, Walter, Edward, John and William; and a sister, Evelyn.
Her family would like to acknowledge the doctors, nurses and staff of both the Regional and Moses Taylor Hospitals; Dr. Joseph Grecco and staff; Green Ridge Nursing Home; her dear friends from Telespond; and to the angels of Commonwealth Hospice for all in their own special way guiding her and her family through her final journey with dignity and peace.
Private arrangements are entrusted to Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, her family is asking for everyone to do a random act of kindness in her memory.
