Marie E. Gavin Schmidt, age 76, a lifelong resident of West Scranton, died Monday evening at home. Born on December 28, 1935, daughter of the late Vincent and Belinda Ford Gavin, Marie attended West Scranton High School. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the former Mercy Hospital and Mayflower Manufacturing. A woman of deep Roman Catholic faith, she was a member of St. Patrick’s Church. Her family was the focal point of her life and spending time with her grandchildren brought her the greatest joy. A loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be forever missed by those who loved her.
She is survived by her four children, John Holden and wife Marilyn of Scranton, Patrick Holden and wife Elizabeth of Tunkhannock, Harry and Dana Salemba, both of Scranton; brothers, Edward Gavin and wife Marie of Dunmore, Eugene Gavin and wife Harriet of Ashley, and Jack Gavin and wife Joan of Scranton; and sisters, Dolores Wyshock of Scranton, and Katherine Meyers and husband Jerome of Lake Winola; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brothers, Paul, Vincent and Robert Gavin also preceded her in death.
Her family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Robert Kaville and the staff of Traditional Home Health and Hospice for all of the care given to Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday at 9:30AM in St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton. Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-7:00PM at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
