George J. Duffy, Sr., age 72, of West Scranton, passed away Sunday at home. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Gvasdauskas Duffy. Wed on August 6, 1966, the couple had been married for 46 years. Born in Scranton on December 20, 1939, son of the late George R. and Rose Lenihan Duffy, George was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1957. In 1958, at the age of 19, he started a wholesale jewelry trade shop by the name of Duffy Jewelers. He worked as a jeweler at Sugarman’s throughout the1960’s and upon leaving Sugarman’s in1968, he began his own retail jewelry business, Duffy Jewelers of downtown Scranton. Until his recent health issues, he had operated the business along with his son, Greg. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton. He was also served with the 365th Engineers of the US Army Reserves.
An avid golfer who enjoyed spending time with his family, he will be dearly missed.
He is survived by four sons, Greg Duffy of Scranton, George Duffy, Jr., and wife Kim of Factoryville, Kevin Duffy of Scranton and Dan Duffy and wife Marcy of Scranton; a brother, Francis Duffy and wife Loraine of Cresco; an aunt, Sister Francis Gabriel, IHM, of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Connor, Emily, Mackenzie, Kevin, Andrew, George and Samantha Duffy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Duffy.
His family would like to thank both Dr. Michael K. Montella, M.D., and the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their exceptional care throughout George’s illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 10:00AM in St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-8:00PM at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George’s name to either the American Cancer Society, as he was a 7-year lung cancer survivor, to 712 South Keyser Avenue Taylor, 18517, or to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, #7, Wilkes Barre, 18701.
