William D. Giles, age 92, a resident of Wesley Village in Pittston and formerly of Duryea, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday morning. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Gloria C. Felts Giles. Bill was born in West Scranton on July 1, 1920 to the late William and Celia Giles, He was educated in the Scranton Schools. Bill proudly served his country and was an Army Veteran of WWII, where he received the African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one bronze star, the WWII Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a forklift operator for 35 years at the A&P Warehouse. Bill had a life of service to the Brick United Methodist Church in Duryea, where his dedication and devotion will not be forgotten. He served on the church’s Board of Trustees, sang in the choir, served as head usher and was Sunday School Superintendant. He was a lifetime member of the Excelsior Hose Company of Duryea and a member of the American Legion Post #920 of West Scranton. More recently, he was a janitor at the church and was also an assistant for the Kearney Funeral Homes in both Old Forge and Scranton. Bill was a loyal and dedicated man with a caring and gentle heart. He will be lovingly remembered by those who knew him.
Also surviving are his son, Rev. Jerry Giles and wife Pat of Long Beach, California; his sister, Priscilla Miller of Long Island, New York; his two grandchildren, Jennifer Chheang and husband Sophon, and Jeffrey Giles and wife Beth; and four great-grandchildren, Zion and Soryia Chheang, Ruby and Fiona Giles.
Preceding him in death was a son, William D. Giles, Jr., and a sister, Beverly Marucci.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 1:00PM, in Wesley Village Chapel, 209 Robert Road in Pittston, to be conducted by Rev. Jerry Giles. Interment will follow at the Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the chapel on Saturday from noon until services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s name to the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Avenue, Duryea, 18642.
