Jeanne M. Heffron, R.N., age 86, of Scranton, passed away Saturday morning under the care of Mercy Hospital’s Hospice Unit in Scranton. Her husband, the late William Jerome Heffron, died on November 21, 1958. Born in Taylor on April 16, 1924, daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn Byron Gibbs, Jeanne hadn’t missed a day of school in 12 years prior to graduating from the former St. Ann’s High School. She graduated from the Scranton Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and earned her certification as a specialist in Ostomy from the Boston University School of Nursing. A Registered Nurse, she worked as an Ostomy Clinician for the Mercy Hospital prior to her retirement. Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in West Scranton. A member of her church’s Society of the Faithful, she was also a member of the 800 Club of the Immaculate Conception Church.
A loving mother, nana, great-nana and sister, she will be forever missed.
She is survived by her children, her daughter, Nancy McGough and husband James J. of West Scranton; and her son, William Heffron and wife Barbara of Grand Lake, Colorado; her six granddaughters, Erin Stefani and husband John, Kathleen Evans and husband JW, Michelle McGough, Nancy Van Fleet and husband Gary, Christine Sutphin and Meghan Heffron; and seven great-grandchildren, Daniel and Emily Stefani, Fione and Kate Evans, Aubrianna and Amelia Rose Van Fleet and Zachary Stanton; and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Charles Gibbs, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday to begin at 8:45AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue in West Scranton with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, Jackson Street in Scranton, to be celebrated by Msgr. David L. Tressler, former Pastor.
Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
Because of her special bond with her great grandson Daniel, donations may be made in her memory to either the PLCTA Foundation (c/0 1243 Wyoming Avenue, 3rd floor, Scranton, 18509) or SAFE (c/o Arena Hub Business Complex, 275 Mundy Street, Suite 201, Wilkes Barre, 18702), organizations which support children with Autism.
