Carol (Hartzell) Irving, age 76 of Scranton’s Hill Section, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning at home. She is survived by her beloved husband, Tom Irving. The couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 17th.
Born on April 30, 1946 and raised in Scranton, Carol was the daughter of the late Anne D. Hartzell. A graduate of the former Scranton Central High School, she then began working for Reuben H. Donnelley Telephone Directory Co. before having her son, Michael. She returned to work as the well-known evening telephone operator at Scranton’s Mercy Hospital before retiring after over two decades with the hospital.
Carol enjoyed baking and cooking and her favorite pastime was certainly needlepointing. A lifelong animal lover, she especially adored her three predeceased Golden Retrievers.
Kind, caring and generous to all, she will forever be loved by her family and friends.
She is survived by her loving son, Michael Irving and fiancé Jennifer of Center Valley; her brothers, Barry Hartzell and wife Janet of Souderton and Stuart Hartzell of St. Louis, MO; brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Robert Irving and wife, Diane of Dalton, Joseph Irving and wife, Joanne of Hughestown, and Mary Yarem and husband, Michael of Scranton; and nieces and nephews.
Both a brother-in-law, Edward Irving, and a sister-in-law, Therese Irving, also preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers and with regard to her love for her pups, memorial contributions may be made in Carol’s name to the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (https://dvgrr.org/support/donate/)
Private services and burial arrangements at Dunmore Cemetery are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main ave., Scranton.
