Daniel A. Zellers, age 49 and the former Police Chief of the Jermyn Police Department, passed away Monday evening under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart’s Inpatient Unit in Dunmore, after an illness. He is survived by his adoring wife and best friend, Lisa Urda Zellers. Wed on February 20, 1995, the couple were married for 22 years.
Born in Peckville on February 4, 1968, and son of Daniel and Florence Davitt Zellers, Daniel was a graduate of the former Bishop O’Hara High School, Class of 1986. Upon graduation, he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Political Science from the University of Scranton. He completed the Police Academy – ACT 120 from Lackawanna Junior College before beginning a career in law enforcement. Prior to becoming ill, he served as Jermyn Borough’s Police Chief. A member of the Fraternal Order of Police, he taught for the D.A.R.E. America program. He also enjoyed fishing, loved animals and was a WWII history fanatic. A loving husband, uncle, relative and friend, he will be forever missed.
He is also survived by a father-in-law, Peter Urda of Jermyn; a brother-in-law, Paul Urda and wife Michelle of Jermyn; a sister-in-law, Jennifer Wasnock and husband Lawrence of Langhorne; and nephews, Justin and Matthew Urda, both of Jermyn, and Jordan and Aiden Wasnock, both of Langhorne.
