Eleanor (Ellie) Herman, age 84, of Roaring Brook Twp., passed away Friday at home, after a recent illness. She is survived by her high school sweetheart, best friend and beloved husband of 66 years, Albert Herman. The couple were married November 3, 1950.
Born in Glen Lyon on September 11, 1932, and daughter of the late Helen and Stanley Isdebski, Ellie was a graduate of the former Newport Twp. High School. She owned and operated ‘The Wine Cellar’ restaurant and bar on Mulberry Street in Scranton, where she enjoyed serving the students of the University of Scranton for many years. Prior to her recent retirement, she served as a caregiver for St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, where she was recognized for over 25 years of dedication. Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a member of St. Eulalia’s Parish in Moscow.
Ellie certainly lived a full and diverse life. She was a former East Scranton Farm League baseball coach who was also noted as the first woman in Scranton to own a motorcycle. She enjoyed flying glider planes, collecting drift wood and cooking, her specialty. She was fun-loving, out-going and kind, and possessed an amazing selflessness as she loved caregiving to those around her. She’ll be forever missed by her loved ones.
She is survived by her son, Richard (Gary) Herman and significant other, Diane Gilchrist of Moosic; her sister, Joanne Furek and husband George of Muncy; four grandchildren, Danielle Bicica and husband Glen, Lindsey Spano and husband P.J., Ryan Herman and fiance Jennifer Wrabel and Eric Chabal and fiance Lana Glodzik; and four great grandchildren.
Her daughter, Diane Chabal, preceded her in death.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the tremendous care taken of Ellie throughout her illness.
Blessing services are scheduled for Tuesday at 1:00PM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 12:00PM until services at the funeral home.
