Mildred Legg, beloved mother, passed away Saturday, August 20th, 2016, at the age of 89, following a brief illness.
Born on September 29, 1926, Mildred was the daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Fitt Serafin. A lifelong resident of Old Forge, she was a graduate of both Old Forge High School, Class of 1944, and Lackawanna Business School. She was a lifetime member of the former St. Michael’s Church in Old Forge where she was also a reader. She was also a member and officer of St. Theresa’s Lodge, as well as the Polish Womens Alliance, where she served as President of Council 4B. Mildred was employed by Capital Records in Scranton, before working for the Social Security Administration, until her retirement.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bernard Serafin; her granddaughter, Melanie Gatto; her son-in-law, Harry Rescigno; and her husband of 42 years, William “Buddy” Legg. Upon her husband’s death, Mildred finished his term as Old Forge Borough Councilman. She then ran for re-election and became the first woman to be elected to Council in Old Forge Borough history.
She is survived by her daughters, Patty Rescigno of Shavertown and Sandy Barletta and husband Joe of Old Forge; her niece, Karen Connors of Old Forge; grandchildren, Tony Gatto and wife Michelle, Angel Gatto and husband Rob, Hope Rescigno and Christa Rescigno; seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mildred’s family wishes to thank Drs. Frank Milani, Charles Grad and Emma Rubin, along with the entire staffs of both Geisinger South Hospital and Celtic Hospice Inpatient Unit, for the tremendous care given to her throughout her illness.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 8:45AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, at 123 West Grace Street in Old Forge, to be celebrated by Rev. August A. Ricciardi, Pastor. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
