Frank Loughney, Sr., age 98, of West Scranton, PA, passed away Monday morning at Geisinger Community Medican Center in Scranton, after a sudden illness. Frank is survived by his adoring wife of 37 years, Edith Beighley Loughney. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Kurtz Loughney.
Born in Dunmore on December 10, 1917, son of the late Joseph and Jane Gallagher Loughney, Frank was a graduate of Dunmore High School, Class of 1935. Stationed in Pearl Harbor just days before December 7, 1941, the day Japanese invasion, Frank served in the Pacific from the war’s onset until its conclusion – and beyond. He served his country with 22 years of honorable service. He was honored by Lackawanna County in 2015 with a picnic at McDade Park celebrating the 70th anniversary of WWII’s victorious end.
He then returned home, earning his Bachelors Degree from the University of Scranton in 1954. He moved with his family to work in Philadelphia, before returning home once again. He owned a Grocery Store in West Scranton, and upon its closure, worked as a stock broker, until his retirement.
Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in West Scranton. He was also a former member of the Irish Cultural Society and the West Side Democrats. He and his wife, Edith, were “snow birds” for the past 29 years, spending their winters between Hollandale and Titusville, Florida.
A loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, he will forever be missed by his loved ones.
He is also survived by his son, Frank Loughney and wife Margaret of Scott Twp.; his sister, Ann Kovach of Scranton; five grandchildren; six great grandddaughters; and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Rosemary Crovak of Scranton.
His daughter, Ruthann David; and many siblings also preceded him in death.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Thursday at 9:15AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton, to be concelebrated by Rev. Gregory Loughney, Frank’s grandson, and Rev. Stephen Krawontka, Associate Pastor. Interment, will military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard, will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 29th, between 5-7:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Frank’s name to St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, 1403 Jackson Street, Scranton, Pa., 18504.
