James D. Dougherty, Jr., age 56, of Scranton, passed away Sunday at home. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Stanvitch Dougherty. Wed on July 2, 1999, the couple were married 15 years.
Born on January 20, 1958, and raised in Dunmore, he was the son of the late James D., Sr., and Mary Flynn Dougherty. A graduate of the former Bishop O’Hara High School, Class of 1976, he then graduated from Johnson Technical School. A master carpenter, he owned and operated Dougherty Construction Company of Scranton for 30 years. An outdoorsman who had many great memories of spending time at his cabin, he was also an avid hunter who was a 37-year member of the Rod & Gun Club. The greatest joy in his life came while spending time with his grandchildren. Passing away unexpectedly Sunday evening, his family finds comfort in knowing he will love them “always and forever.”
He is also survived by four step children, Thomas Evans and fiance Jessica Capwell of Throop, Joseph Evans and fiance Kristen Baun of Scranton, Kristy Berardelli and husband Joseph of Throop and Karly Evans-Homer and husband Christopher of St. Joseph, Michigan; siblings, Michael Dougherty and wife Carol of Mansfield, Texas, Patricia Lombardo of Dunmore, and Ann Gerrity and husband Edward of Yardley; six step-grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony, Constance, Joseph, Emmie and Harper; eight nephews and a niece; a mother-in-law, Sharon Stanvitch; and a sister-in-law, Lisa Stanvitch, both of Scranton.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 2:00PM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K.
