Elaine (VanLouvender) Pugliese, a Carbondale Twp. resident and Moosic native, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday morning at home. She was 84 years old.
Only two days prior to her death, she was preceded by her husband of 53 years, Alan Pugliese.
Born on October 24, 1941, Elaine was the daughter of the late Roger VanLouvender and Evelyn (Smith) VanLouvender Schaufler and husband Daniel. A 1961 graduate of the former Moosic High School, upon marriage she moved to Lake Hopatcong, N.J., where she raised her daughter Brenda and worked for Pinkerton Security Services. She returned to the area in 1994 and settled in Carbondale.
A lifelong member of the Moosic Alliance Community Church, she was a devoted and faithful Christian who was well-versed in the Bible, enjoyed her gospel music, and certainly practiced what she preached. She had deep empathy, a strong mind and a genuine sweetness that made her endearing to all who knew her. Shocked by her loss, she will never be forgotten.
An absolute animal lover, she’ll long be missed by her cats, “Ricky”, “Sweetie”, “Cali”, “Angel” and “Bella”, and her granddogs, “Hemi” amd “Rooster.”
She is also survived by her loving daughter, Brenda Cruse and husband Charles “Chuck” of Jermyn; her grandchildren, Emily, David, Charles and James; her siblings, Louis VanLouvender and wife Barbara of N.J., Harold Schaufler and wife Linda of Moosic, William Schaufler of N.Y., Evelyn “Gail” Bauman and husband Joseph of Scranton and Mary Schaufler of De.; and many nieces and nephews.
Siblings, John “Jack” O’Donnell, Rita O’Malley, Susan VanLouvender, Lorraine Williams, Daniel and Carl Schaufler, Agnes Brady, Hazel Leanoe, Pearl Dudash and Ethel Pretzman also preceded her in death.
Funeral services by Rev. Arthur Harshman will be Monday at 5:00 PM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Private burial, Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until services.
