Richard Kachinski, 65, of Newton Ransom, passed away Saturday, February 19th, at Elkins Crest Nursing Home in Philadelphia, following a long, hard-fought illness.
A Scranton native, Richard was born on February 5, 1960. He was a longtime resident of The Arc of NEPA, where he lived for over 30 years. During that time, he formed many close friendships and was beloved by many staff. His larger-than-life personality was truly one of a kind, and he expressed his love for others in wonderfully unconventional ways.
Richard had a deep love for music, magazines, coffee, and candy. Though his mobility declined over the years, his fierce independence never waned. He always made sure those around him knew exactly what he wanted and needed—often with humor and conviction. He will be remembered for his witty commentary, infectious laugh, and strong spirit. Richard may have had strong opinions and a unique way of expressing himself—but that was exactly what made him so unforgettable.
Richard’s friends and Arc family extend heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Geisinger CMC, Geisinger Wyoming Valley, and Jefferson Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia for the compassionate care they provided during his illness.
He is survived by his loving friends, caregivers, and extended Arc family, all of whom will cherish his memory.
Blessing services are scheduled for Thursday at 9:30 AM at Cathedral Cemetery Chapel in West Scranton with burial to follow. Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard’s name to The Arc of NEPA, c/o 115 Meadow Ave., Scranton, PA 18505. Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions or to leave an online condolence.
