Gwendolyn “Gwen” (Howells) Horn, a longtime West Scranton resident and area educator, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday morning following an illness. She was 82 years old.
On December 7, 1985, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray C. Horn.
Born on March 6, 1943, and raised in Scranton, Gwen was the daughter of the late William and Virginia (Golden) Howells. A 1961 graduate of the former Scranton Central High School, she then furthered her studies at Marywood College, where she would earn her bachelor’s degree in teaching in 1965. Upon raising her children, she would begin a longtime career as an area educator in the Scranton School District and Saint John the Baptist, Pittston, before teaching at St. Patrick’s School (now All Saint Academy) in West Scranton. Through her preparation, dedication and genuine love for the profession, Gwen left a lasting impact on countless students before her well-deserved retirement after 26 years with the school.
To be remembered in so many ways, she was an avid reader who always had a book in her hand. She was a die-hard fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and was an unconditional lover of animals, especially her pups. Kind-hearted, intelligent and loving, Gwen’s memory will long live on.
She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in West Scranton.
She is survived by her loving family including her children, David Horn and Denise Horn, and her sister, Marilyn Howells, all of West Scranton.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of HHCP hospice for their care of Gwen during her illness.
Private arrangements with blessing services by Rev. Richard Fox and burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gwen’s name to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter c/o 967 Griffin Pond Rd., S. Abington Twp., PA. 18411.
