George J. Smerecky, 86, of Taylor, died Friday morning at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scranton. His wife of 25 years was the former Marie Celli, who died February 15, 1992. Born December 13, 1938 in Scranton, son of the late George and Frances Bogus Smerecky, George was a graduate of Taylor High School. Upon graduation, George enlisted and honorably served in the United States Air Force. For over 25 years, George was a mailman with the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Taylor American Legion Post 306, where he served on the Board, and the American Ukrainian Veterans Association, Scranton.
George was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle. Family and friends were his greatest pleasure. An avid sports fan, George enjoyed watching any sporting event, but deep down was a true NY Jets fan. He enjoyed going out to eat and the Game Show Network. Although his passing leaves a void, the memories he leaves will last for generations to come.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Georgianne Gedman, and husband, Chuck, Scranton, and Alexis McGloin, and husband, Sean, Bryn Mawr; four grandchildren, Jon Smerecky, and wife, Jennifer, McKenzie Davey, and husband, Tyler, Payton and Quinn McGloin; two great grandchildren, Greyson and Lincoln Smerecky; two sisters, Mary Ann Ralston, Scranton, and Elaine Kobesky, and husband, Edward, Moosic; and 2 nephews.
A bother-in-law, Thomas Ralston also preceded him in death.
A Celebration of George’s life will be held on Friday at 11:30 AM in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main Street, Old Forge, with Rev. Dr. Michael Shambora, officiating. Interment with Military Honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will be in Old Forge Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 10 AM until the time of the service in the funeral home. Service by the Taylor American Legion Post 306 will be at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Ukrainian Veterans Association, 237 Railroad Avenue, Scranton, Pa. 18505.
