.Eileen (Mayer) Bowen, a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away peacefully at age 87 on Monday morning, December 23, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd P. Bowen, on May 18, 2004. The high school sweethearts were married for 41 years.
Born on June 27, 1937, Eileen was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Mary T. (McLaughlin) Mayer. She was a 1955 graduate of West Scranton High School and worked at several clerical positions in Scranton before marrying and taking on her greatest role as Mom to her four children.
Eileen later re-entered the workforce as administrative assistant to The Honorable Judge James M. Munley in the Court of Common Pleas for 20 years before he was appointed to the U.S. Federal Court for the Middle District of PA. She continued to work beside him until her well-deserved retirement on October 30, 2009. Her outstanding work ethic was acknowledged in 1997 with the Lackawanna Bar Association’s Harold E. Miller Award.
For many years, she was also a sales representative for Avon products where she earned numerous awards and corporate recognition for her sales achievements.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Eileen was very passionate about politics. Her commitment started when she became a Kennedy Girl. She was a member of the Lackawanna County Federation of Democratic Women and the 2017 recipient of the Democratic Woman of the Year Award.
Eileen’s generosity and selfless efforts were unwavering. She was a proud member of the Society of Irish Women, Ladies Auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Center and spent many years working with Robert Morris School’s P.T.A., including serving as past President.
She had many dear friends, both old and new, and never missed an occasion to send them a card. Eileen was a proud Irishwoman who loved spending St. Patrick’s Day with family and friends, which included baking several batches of her mother’s “Irish Soda Cake” for her family and friends as well as attending the parade.
Eileen’s engaging and magnetic personality was unforgettable, and to know her was to know she was the life of any party. She loved to share her songs and stories whenever the opportunity arose. Her greatest joys were spending time with her adored family and countless friends. Certainly, one of a kind, Eileen will never be forgotten.
Eileen is survived by her loving family, her children: Mary Dorothy Bowen of Emmaus, Eileen Pospisil and husband Michael of Fredericksburg, VA, Roberta “Bobbi” Marler and husband Jim of Emmaus, Floyd Bowen, Jr. and wife Lisa of Forty Fort; her nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren who adored their “Big A Mom”; a sister, Eleanor Anderson of Bethlehem; and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by seven siblings, Robert, John and Donald Mayer, Margaret “Peggy” Farrell, Pauline Fallon, Alice Jean Gilgallon and Madelyn “Madge” Purcell.
Her family wishes to thank the entire staff of the Atrium of Allentown, where Eileen recently resided, for their kindness, care, and truly making her feel like family.
