Theresa A. (Bauman) Brown, a longtime Duryea resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27th, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gerald R. Brown, on April 5, 2008.
Born Nov 4, 1933, Theresa was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Apolski) Bauman. Educated in Duryea schools, she was a graduate of the Duryea High School’s Class of 1951.
Theresa was employed in the area garment industry until her retirement, when she and Gerald moved to the Tunkhannock area, where they enjoyed almost two decades of peaceful river life together. She was employed as a greeter at the Tunkhannock Wal-Mart until the age of 75, where she met many wonderful people and formed many
lasting friendships. When her health allowed, she enjoyed monthly luncheons with her “retired Wal-Mart ladies”.
While living in Duryea, Theresa was a devoted member of the former Sacred Heart Church. She served as a catechism teacher for many years, as well as a volunteer for the Lenten food sales and annual church picnic. She also volunteered at the Germania Hose Company, peeling potatoes and prepping food for the annual picnic. When living in Tunkhannock, she became a member of Nativity BVM Church, and remained so until her passing.
She will be remembered as a kind, generous, hardworking, selfless person who loved her family above all else. She was an amazing cook and baker who also enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, sewing, crocheting and crafting. Theresa crocheted and donated caps for premature babies, lap robes and afghans for nursing homes and veterans hospitals, and warm hats which were included with ugly quilts for distribution to those in need.
Theresa is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Emily Eaton and husband Floyd, Duryea, with whom she resided, son James Brown, Willow Grove and beloved grandson Michael Brown of Willow Grove; her sister-in-law, Theresa Bowman of Duryea; and wonderful, caring nieces and nephews, Frances and Douglas Edwards of Hunlock Creek who held a special place in her heart.
She was also preceded in deaths by brothers, Frank Bowman and Joseph Bowman, and a daughter-in-law, Melissa (Harris) Brown.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gerard Nealon, Dr. Christopher Peters and Dr. Anees Fogley for the excellent and compassionate care that they provided Theresa throughout the years.
The staff of Advanced Home Health Care Specialists also provided wonderful care for Theresa, especially her nurse, Kim, and physical therapist, Jean Marie.
Memorial contributions may be made in Theresa’s memory to Meals on Wheels of Greater Pittston c/o 59 S. Main St, Pittston, Pa. 18640.
A celebration of life is planned for a later date with arrangements under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
