John “Moonie” Monahan, 78, a lifelong resident of West Scranton, passed away unexpectedly on Friday afternoon. In 1965, John married the love of his life, Mary Jo (Frioni) Monahan. The couple were married for 59 years. Born in Scranton and son of the late Frank and Theresa (Connor) Monahan, John was a graduate of West Scranton High School. Possessing a tireless work ethic, he worked at Vermont Sportswear Co., Taylor, for over three decades where he was a union steward. Prior to his well-deserved retirement, he worked another 18 years in the maintenance department at the University of Scranton’s campus. During his employment there, he was awarded the first Sursum Corda Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the life and mission of the University.

He was an avid golfer and a fan of both the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. While he took great pride in all he did in life, nothing was more important to him than the love and devotion he had for his family. His selflessness and kindness will never be forgotten.

Along with Mary Jo, he is also survived by his children, Margie Hanley and husband Joe of Glenside, Pa., Teri Monahan and Tim Harris of New Rochelle, N.Y., and John Zachary Monahan and wife Stephanie Murphy of Clarks Summit; five grandchildren, Brian, Flynn and Maggie Hanley, Eulaily and Indiana Monahan; siblings, Michael Monahan and wife Donna of Dunmore, Robert Monahan and wife Doris of Allentown and Patsy Gelfand of Delray Beach, Fl.; and many nieces and nephews.

Siblings, Mary Good, Eileen Baker, Eugene, Frank and Joseph Monahan, and Chester Tomarelli preceded him in death.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-7:00 PM at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church. Future private interment will be at Cathedral cemetery.

In his final act of kindness, John donated the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105. Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions or to leave a condolence.
