Mary “Eileen” Farry, a guest of St. Mary’s Villa Assisted Living and a West Scranton native, passed away Friday after an illness. She was 77 years old.
Born on August 14, 1947, Eileen was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary P. (Killeen) Farry. A familiar face throughout her neighborhood, Eileen was educated at West Scranton High School.
A candy striper at the former Mercy Hospital in her teens, her genuine kindness and compassion was on full display even as a young adult.
She would go on to work for several local hospitals and nursing facilities before retiring from Our Lady of Peace Residence at Marywood University.
Her innate ability to be thoughtful was always evident by her remembering every loved one’s birthday and by being so generous in sending cards and gifts.
More recently she gained an extended family at St. Mary’s Villa where she was known as “the mayor.” She really enjoyed her time there and developed an affinity for BINGO, ultimately running the villa’s BINGO games.
Above all came her strong faith. She was a lifelong member of the St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton, while also being a member of the church’s Society of the Faithful.
She is survived by her siblings, Roseanne Dippell and husband George of Malvern, Edward Farry of Scranton and Thomas Farry and wife Patty of Dunmore; her nephews, Andy and Greg Dippell; her two great nieces, Jane Beyer Dippell and Charleigh Dippell; her great nephew, Joseph Dippell; and many cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved uncle, Bob Killeen, with whom she previously resided.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of St. Mary’s Villa for making Eileen’s stay so special and undoubtedly rewarding.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 AM until Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eileen’s name to St. Patrick’s Parish c/o 1401 Jackson St., Scranton, Pa. 18504.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
