Philip C. Griggs, 76, of Moosic, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, at home. His wife, Tia Webb Griggs, died June 20, 2021.
Born Dec. 16, 1947, in Scranton, son of the late Howard Sr. and Emmaline Rodney Griggs, Philip was a 1966 graduate of Abington Heights High School. A Vietnam War veteran, Philip served in the United States Navy. For 24 years, Philip was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier and mail processor, prior to his retirement. A former member of the Moosic Assembly of God Church, Philip was a current member of Moosic Alliance Community Church. Philip was also a member of the Clarks Summit Post 7069, Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion Post 585, Duryea, and a past member of Waverly Lodge #301, Free and Accepted Masons.
Phil was an avid Nittany Lions and Eagles fan, who supported the local Riverside Vikings. His love for Christmas was very well known. He was like a kid every holiday season. In his younger days, he put up lavish Christmas displays and even as the years went by, he had his special Christmas tree and train display ready for family visits. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and golf. But nothing brought more joy to his life than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their school activities and making special nights out with them. Taken too soon, he will be fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Surviving are his children, Kristin Abdo and husband, Joseph, Scranton; Eric Griggs, Alabama; and Kevin Griggs, Pittston; stepdaughters, Susan Walsh and husband, Robert Saum, Virginia; Phyllis Theriault and husband, Michael, Taylor; Lisa Gretz and husband, Michael, Taylor; and Thelma “Emma” Steidle, Virginia; grandchildren, Emilee, Susan, Trey, Connor, Paris Paige and Rozalia Griggs; Kristen Wincovitch and husband, Jeffrey; Michael Theriault and Jacob Theriault; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Howard Griggs Jr. and wife, Judy; and Joseph Griggs and wife, Ruth.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Phyllis and Louise Ann; and brothers, David and Richard.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at noon in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. Erik Ferguson, pastor of Moosic Alliance Community Church. Interment with military honors will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 585, 329 Main St., Duryea, PA 18642. To leave an online condolence, please visit the funeral home website.
