John P. Barlik, age 72 and a longtime Hughestown resident, died peacefully Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes Barre, following a brief illness.
Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Duryea natives John and Gloria Barlik. A graduate of Pittston Area High School’s Class of 1969, he also graduated from Johnson School of Technology in 1972 and was employed as a machinist for Dupont Tool & Machine Co. before a well-deserved retirement after 50 years with the company. He also worked as a part-time pharmaceutical courier for Omni Health.
In his younger days, he played softball for Mo-Ritz and American Precision Glass, and also played in the Sunday basketball league at St. Joseph Oblates.
John was an avid sports fan of the New York Giants, New York Knicks and was a season ticket holder for many years for his beloved New York Yankees. He followed all levels of local sports, including the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Penquins and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Railriders.
John was also a longtime member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Duryea.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Paulette (Capitano) Barlik, on September 30, 2009; and his brother-in-law, George Sworen, on August 14, 2023.
He is survived by his son, John Barlik of Hughestown; his sister, Connie Sworen of Old Forge; his brother, Francis Barlik and wife Erin of Hanover Twp.; niece and nephews, Sofie, Matthew Barlik (godson) and George Sworen and companion Katherine Earney; his dear friend, Maryann Tobin of Avoca; also many cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday at 9:30 AM at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 127 Stephenson Street in Duryea, to be celebrated by Rev. Michael Bryant, Pastor. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carverton. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 4-7:00 PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
