Loretta (Greco) Garrity, recently of Bridgewater, New Jersey, formerly of the Glenmaura section of Moosic and an Old Forge native, passed away Friday evening at Laurel Circle in Bridgewater, N.J. She was 94 years young. On March 18, 1981, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Reed Garrity.

Born in Taylor on Feb. 28, 1930, daughter of the late Carmen and Anna Maria (Talerico) Greco, Loretta was a graduate of Old Forge High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Marywood University before later obtaining her master’s degree in education from the University of Scranton.

A career educator, Loretta spent the majority of her career as a mathematics teacher for both the former North Scranton and Scranton Central high schools. Earlier in her career, Loretta taught at the Oral School for the Deaf in Philadelphia and later, at the Scranton State School for the Deaf. Even after her well-deserved retirement Loretta continued to do what she loved – teaching – as she remained a private tutor for many years. She left an impression on generations of students through her decades of commitment to education.

Loretta was always on the go with a tireless work ethic and energy. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Elmhurst Country Club and their women’s golf association. She was active in The Century Club of Scranton and was a board member of the former Y.W.C.A. She was committed to democracy and volunteered at the polls every election cycle when able. She was an avid traveler alongside her family and friends, having traveled countless times across the globe creating some of her lifelong fondest memories.

The epitome of grace and dignity, Loretta was kindness and generosity personified. She passed away peacefully after a life well lived.

She is survived by her beloved family, including her beloved daughter, Mary Beth McDonough and husband, Mark, of Medford, Mass.; two grandsons who adored their “Grum,” Ned McDonough and fiancée, Mariel Lambrukos, of Quincy, Mass.; and Reed McDonough, of Washington, D.C.; nieces, Suzanne Greco, of Taylor and Sandy Romanko of N.C.; nephew, Freddy Greco, of Duryea; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

The last surviving of nine Greco siblings, Loretta was also preceded in death by brothers, William “Wimpy,” Frank, Anthony “Tony” and Fred Greco; and sisters, Eleanor Cherundolo, Jennie Pettinato, Irene Lupia and Dr. Ann Marie Greco.

A blessing service is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson St., West Scranton. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Those attending the funeral service are asked to go directly to church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Loretta’s name to The Trevor Project, Attn: Development, P.O. Box 69232, West Hollywood, CA 90069.
