Mary Ann Hazzouri passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday morning, a beautiful transition after a life well-lived.
Born in Scranton on June 8, 1928, Mary Ann was the only child of Nabiha and Said Douaihy. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Mary Ann graduated from Marywood Seminary, Scranton, PA, studied at Marymount College in Terrytown, NY, and graduated from Marywood College, Scranton. A woman ahead of her time, after college graduation she studied advanced French at Laval University, Quebec, Canada.
Mary Ann was fluent in three languages—Arabic, French, and English. She excelled at the game of bridge, reaching the Masters level, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. She was an avid reader, devouring several novels a week right up until the very end.
As a young girl, Mary Ann was an accomplished pianist. Later in life, she discovered her talent and love for oil painting. She truly enjoyed sharing her paintings with her children and grandchildren and was tickled when she visited and saw them hung in their homes. She was a fabulous cook. One of her greatest joys was preparing Lebanese feasts for her family and teaching her daughter and daughters-in-law how to perfect the family favorites.
Mary Ann’s life centered around her family, and her faith came first. Her relationship with God was dynamic and steadfast. She said the rosary multiple times a day, and actively prayed for specific intentions, family, and friends constantly. If your name was on Mary Ann’s prayer list, your prayer was sure to be answered.
Mary Ann was active in the community for many years, serving as the President of the Sant’ Andrea Society, as a member of many non-profit boards, and volunteering at Scranton Preparatory School and Marywood Seminary.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Albert A. Hazzouri, Sr., and her son, Michael. Mary Ann’s memory will live on through her devoted children, Alex (and his wife, Sharon), Madonna (and her husband, Chuck), Dr. Albert Jr. (and his wife, Dr. Lauren), John (and his wife, Virginia), Dr. David (and his fiancé, Jane), her grandchildren, Michael (and his wife, Melanie), Albert, Mark (and his wife, Allyson), Angelina, David, and Ava, and her great-grandchildren, Max, Olivia, Palmer, and Lucy.
Mary Ann celebrated her 96th birthday on June 8 surrounded by her entire family and has now been reunited with her beloved husband, “Babe.”
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday at 11:00 AM at The Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road in Clarks Summit, to be celebrated by Rev. John Lapera, Pastor. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery in West Scranton. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Monday from 9:00 AM until Mass. Those attending the funeral should go directly to church.
