Eugene Talerico, Sr., a lifelong Old Forge resident, passed away Friday morning at Oak Ridge Health Care Center in Taylor following an illness. He was 94 years young.
On March 4, 2018, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Helene (Silinskie) Talerico.
Born on March 12, 1930, Eugene was the son of the late Samuel and Ida Talerico. He was a graduate of Old Forge High School before beginning a family legacy of University of Scranton graduates, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology in 1951. He would later earn his Masters of Science Degree in Education from Temple University in 1963.
Proudly serving alongside his brother, George, he was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before his honorable discharge from service on January 6, 1955.
A lifelong believer in the importance of education, Eugene was a proud member of the Scranton Federation of Teachers (SFT) as a dedicated 35 year educator at West Scranton High School where “Mr. Talerico” taught American History and Economics. Throughout his decades of teaching, he was able to impact the lives of countless students, something he was always grateful for. Once he stepped out of the classroom, he then worked as a Home & School Visitor for the Scranton School District until his retirement from the District.
Always on the move and possessing a tireless work ethic, he later served as a representative Payee for the Advocacy Alliance and worked at his sister’s business, Lease Dry Cleaners in Old Forge, until the young age of 93.
He is survived by the family of whom he was so proud, especially his son, Atty. Eugene Talerico, Jr. and wife Laura of Old Forge, and his granddaughter, Dr. Katherine Talerico, Psy.D. and fiance Dr. Jacob Ratowski of Delaware County; his siblings, Julie Aulisio and husband George and Ida Jean Talerico, all of Old Forge, and George Talerico of Scranton; nieces and nephew, Denise Gurz, Meredith Oliver-Wilson and husband Bill Wilson and Dr. George Aulisio, Jr. and wife Lindsay.
Eugene’s family would like to thank the incredibly talented and compassionate healthcare professionals at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and Compassionate Care Hospice. Dubbed by many as “the Mayor of Oakridge”, he treasured the title as well as the healthcare facility and its staff, especially Maria Fronduti, “his favorite nurse”, for the exceptional care he received.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday at 9:15 AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish in Old Forge, to be celebrated by Rev. August Ricciardi, Pastor. Burial with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at Old Forge Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday between 4-7:00 PM.
