Thurman L. Hayes, age 83, of Scranton, passed away Friday at Allied Hospice, following an illness.
On November 23, 2013, he was preceded in death by his adored wife, Patricia Ann (Nenish) Hayes.
Born on March 12, 1941, and raised in Raleigh, N.C., Thurman was the son of the late Edris and Gladys Hayes. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War prior to his honorable discharge and relocation to Northeastern Pa.
For over six decades until his reluctant retirement at age 82, Thurman was a proud and dedicated truck driver. He last worked as an operator for Khitney Lines, Inc. A human GPS, there wasn’t a location in the country he wasn’t familiar with.
He was a lifelong fisherman, enjoyed cooking, and never passed up a good western movie nor all sorts of junk food. His genuine concern for others was amazing and, certainly a kind soul, he would do anything for anyone in need. From his sense of humor to his days playing guitar for a gospel band, his countless memories will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his children, Jordan Lee Hayes, Theresa Hayes, Kenneth Hayes and wife Robin, Monica Hayes and girlfriend Cathy Jones and Thurman Hayes, Jr., Billy Joe and Yvonne DeGraffenreid, Edward Hunt, Shannon Osborne and fiance Eugene Lucas and Michael Nenish and wife Nicole; dear companion, Laverne Wyffels; 22 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Sons, Ivan and Douglas Hayes, also preceded him in death.
A celebration of Thurman’s life is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, where family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 4-7:00 PM.
Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions (which Thurman wouldn’t need) or to leave a condolence.
