Alfred David Van Louvender, Sr., age 91 and a lifelong Moosic resident, passed away Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton, after an illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Diann (Wignall) Van Louvender. The couple married on Valentine’s Day of 1976.
Born in Moosic on July 3, 1932, Alfred was the son of the late Luxley and Jane (Simpson) Van Louvender. For nearly four decades, he served as a tractor trailer operator for DeFazio Express, Inc. of Moosic. His meticulous driving record including over two million miles driven without an accident. Feats like this led to him being continually awarded for his success on the road.
Alfred was active throughout the community, having been a member of the Moosic Lions Club and the American Legion Post #329 as well as being an active volunteer with both the Moosic and Spring Brook Volunteer Hose Companies.
Some of his best memories were made at his Thornhurst cabin where he spent a lot of time fishing, hunting and, most importantly, being with his family, especially his adored grandkids. He will always be missed by family and friends.
He is also survived by his son, Raymond Van Louvender of Taylor; his daughter, Bernice Ragona of Taylor; his step sons, James, William and Joseph Pherreigo; his step daughters, Linda Jenkins and Theresa Krulikowski; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; sisters, Linda Simon and husband Gerard of FL. and Alice Moore of Taylor; and many nieces and nephews.
A son, Alfred David Van Louvender, Jr.; a step daughter, Marysue Smith; and siblings, Robert Van Louvender, Nancy Dommes and Selma Lorraine Van Louvender, also preceded him in death.
Private arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
