Mary Frances (Passariello) Sweeney, of Throop and a longtime West Scranton resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at home following an illness. She was 67 years young.
She married the love of her life on May 16, 1981. She and her husband, Anthony “Tony” Sweeney, celebrated 42 years of marriage.
On May 19, 1956, Mary was born in Scranton to the late Anthony M. and Mary F. (Sledzik) Passariello and was a 1975 graduate of West Scranton High School. She worked for several companies before taking on her greatest role in life, as a mother, raising her two beloved daughters. Later on, she began working for Allied Services in Scranton where she served as a resident assistance. She was passionate about her work and found great reward in the difference she was making in her residents’ lives. Having a knack for making friends, her co-workers soon became an extended family to her.
That knack for making friends followed Mary throughout her life. Her genuineness was instantly apparent upon meeting her.
Mary will long be remembered in so many ways. She loved her Hallmark movies, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, every single Christmas song, avidly walking, any and all scratch-off lotto tickets and, of course, a good Blue Moon. Dinners out with Tony became a staple in her life. She had become a familiar face  for decades at several area restaurants from Arcaro and Genell’s and Barrett’s to Cooper’s and Billy B’s.
She was a devoted animal lover, especially to her dogs “Bo” and “Norma Jean” and her cat “Beamer.” She was an absolutely adoring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, relative and friend who will be loved forever.
Along with her husband Tony, she is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Valvano and husband Dr. Gary of Elmira, N.Y., Jillian Dziki and husband Mark of Blakely; her grandchildren who loved their “GiGi”, Gary Santino and Isabella Valvano; her niece whom Mary considered her third daughter, Sara Stranieri of Olyphant; her siblings, Robert Passariello of Old Forge, Bernadine Lutkowski and husband Joseph of Old Forge and Jerome Passariello and wife Carol of Scranton; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Her siblings, Anthony Passariello and Sara Dougher; and recently her pup “Tegan” also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will begin on Monday at 9:15 AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Entombment in the Sweeney family mausoleum, Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Sunday between 2-5:00 PM at the funeral home.
