Morton (Mort) Leon Mandelman, 91, of Scranton, passed away Saturday at Hospice of Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His beloved wife and best friend of 59 years was the late former Harriet Garfinkel.
Born June 3, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late David and Doris Zazmar Mandelman, Morton was a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. A graduate of Erasmus High School and Brooklyn College, Morton was employed as a computer systems analyst prior to his retirement.
Mort was a man of great integrity, he was a loyal, reliable, responsible family man, but don’t let his serious demeanor fool you, because when you least expect it, his dry humor and quick wit would catch you by surprise. He always had a joke up his sleeve and was a great storyteller. Many didn’t know this about him but Mort was a phenomenal dancer and was even recruited by Fred Astaire dance company to help them teach the troops where he served. He was a man of great character who one day bravely chased down a mugger on the streets of N.Y.C to recover the stolen purse of an old lady, she sent him a Christmas card every year to come after that event. That is the kind of man he was.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Donna DePaul and son-in-law Roy who live in California; Susan Wolff and son-in-law Peter in PA; Lisa Mandelman in NY; 3 loving grandchildren Jessica, Jared and Brittany and 5 beautiful great grandchildren.
Private interment will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you kindly make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the local Veterans’ Organization of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., Old Forge.
