Donald (Don) L. Fisch, a lifelong South Scranton resident, passed away Tuesday at St. Mary’s Villa in Elmhurst Twp. He was 91 years young. On Nov. 26 of 2022, Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Catherine “Kitty” M. (Kaub) Fisch.
Born on Dec. 14, 1931, Don was the son of the late John W. and Lena (Philipp) Fisch. A graduate of St. Mary’s High School, he then honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal prior to his honorable discharge on Nov. 17, 1954. For over four decades, Don worked in residential lighting sales, ultimately retiring from Friedman Electric.
Don was a fixture in the South Side community, having served as an active sports volunteer in many capacities. He was a longtime biddy basketball coach at St. Mary’s School, a longtime coach at South Scranton Little League and the official scorekeeper of the South Catholic “Dons.” His passion for sports was great, but what was most meaningful to Don was the bond he was able to develop with his children through sports.
An amazing father who was always active in the lives of his children, he and Kitty continued that family involvement in the lives of both their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, rarely missing any of their activities as well. A mild-mannered man (less an occasional heated reaction to a bad referee call), he was a man of great faith and was certainly proud of the legacy he leaves behind to the three surviving generations of his family.
He is survived by his loving family, including his children, Donald J. Fisch and wife Cindy, Scranton; Ronald J. Fisch and wife Marie, Scranton; Robert Fisch and wife Dina, Clarks Summit; Daniel Fisch and wife Laura, Scranton; Joseph Fisch and wife Lisa, Spring Brook Twp.; and Catherine Scanlon and husband Patrick, Clarks Summit; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren with four on their way; and many nieces and nephews.
The last of four siblings, Don was preceded in death by a brother, John J. Fisch; and sisters, Mary Migliorino and Clare Pantle.
Don’s family will be forever grateful to St. Mary Villa’s “A-Team” for the extraordinary care and compassion shown to Don throughout his stay.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, to be celebrated by Rev. John Lapera, pastor. Entombment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park with military honors by the Dickson City Honor Guard. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s name to St. Mary’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center c/o 516 St. Mary’s Villa Road, Elmhurst Township, PA 18444.
