Elizabeth “Betty Lou” Duffy-Macinsky, a longtime resident of Scranton, passed away Thanksgiving Day at Marywood Heights. She was 85 years young.
Born on February 6, 1938 and raised in Dunmore, Betty Lou was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mildred (McAndrew) Duffy. A 1955 graduate of Dunmore High School, she soon began raising her family of five children.
Possessing a tireless work ethic, she had a very diversified working background. She was an insurance agent for Prudential Financial before becoming a vice president for Columbia Banksharer.
Upon the closure of her office, she began working at the former Globe Store’s Charl-Mont. With her natural knack for customer service, she eventually began working for Scranton’s Mother’s Table where she served as everything from hostess to bookkeeper before becoming the owner and operator of the Newsroom Cafe, also in Downtown Scranton.
Betty Lou was caring, giving and selfless. Always on the go, she enjoyed her independence. She was a dedicated mother while working to support her family. She was proud of her Irish heritage, took great pride in her looks, and was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton.
She is survived by her loving children, Sherry and Kathleen O’Malley, both of Scranton, and Thomas O’Malley of Kingston; thirteen grandchildren, Jason, Kerry, Molly, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Meghan, Thomas, Amanda, Michael, Ian, Dylan, Jenna and Liam; thirteen great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles O’Malley and Alex “Sonny” Macinsky; two children, Joseph O’Malley and Maureen Wilden; a great grandson, Finley; a son-in-law, Paul O’Malley; and a brother, Joseph Duffy.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave., Scranton. Private burial, Cathedral Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 4-6:00 PM at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
