Juan E. (Ruddy) Engle, of Scranton and formerly of Dunmore, passed away Thursday morning at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton, after an illness. She was 91 years young.
On April 24, 2009, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Donald J. Engle.
Born on New Year’s Day, 1932, and raised in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, Juan was the daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Reed) Ruddy. A graduate of the former St. Paul’s High School’s Class of 1950, her tireless work ethic began at an early age while working at the former Mercy Hospital throughout high school. All while raising her family, she continued to work at the hospital before beginning her dedicated and proud career with Clinical Laboratories, Inc. / Pathology Associates, ultimately retiring as the company’s CFO.
Juan’s strong will, work ethic and, most importantly, love for her family are all part of her ever-lasting legacy. She will long live on through the four generations of family she leaves behind.
She was meticulously organized, selflessly always willing to help others, certainly never complained about anything and did whatever she could for her family. Her impact on the lives of her loved ones is immeasurable.
She was an excellent baker and enjoyed drawing and coloring.
She is survived by her loving family, including three children, Maryellen Lake and husband Kenneth of Scranton, Elizabeth Rossi and husband Philip of Jessup and Donald Engle, Jr. and companion Trish McCormick of Scranton; three grandchildren, Alyssa Sumski and husband Paul, Andrew Rossi and Kathleen Dolan and husband Conor; five great grandchildren, Kenny, Gregory, Mason, Sarah Juan and Sutton and a great grandson on his way; a great-great grandson, Lucario Lake; sisters, Rita Doyle of Dunmore and Mary Jane Kelly and husband Bernie of Scranton; and many nieces and nephews.
Siblings, Michael Ruddy, Elizabeth “Betty” Russo, Theresa Kornutiak and Catherine Loretta Walsh, also preceded Juan in death.
Her family would like to acknowledge the staffs of both Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Linwood Nursing Center for their collective care, compassion and kindness throughout her illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave, Scranton. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until Mass. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
Memorial contributions may be made in Juan’s name to Hospice of the Sacred Heart c/o 53 Glenmaura National Blvd., Moosic PA 18507.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
