Marie A. (Ashman) Richards, 82, formerly of Taylor and a longtime resident of the Keyser Valley section of West Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton, after an illness. On Feb. 3, 2020, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Thomas F. Richards.

Born in Scranton on Sept. 9, 1940, and daughter of the late James P. and Florence (Davis) Ashman, Marie was a graduate of West Scranton High School. Upon raising her family, she served many positions of employment from factory worker, to food service, to cleaning for the Scranton School District before, fittingly due to her love of children, retiring from day care supervision.

Marie loved the outdoors and some of her fondest memories were made while camping. Above all else came her family, who meant everything in the world to her. She will be dearly missed by her loved ones.

She is survived by two loving sons, Tom Richards and wife, Lisa; and Paul Richards; her grandson, Tommy Richards; and great-grandchildren, Christopher and Harper Richards; three sisters, Patricia Zanghi and husband Phillip, Sharon Mach, and Deborah Dees and husband William; her brother, James Ashman and wife Annette; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, John Ashman, also preceded her in death.

Marie’s family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire staffs of both Linwood Nursing Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their collective efforts to care for Marie in her final days.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with burial to follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Twp. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 6 and 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
