Atty. John J. Coury, age 63, of Factoryville, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at home. He is survived by the love of his life, his best friend and wife of 33 years, Meghan (Philbin) Coury.
A 1977 graduate of West Scranton High School, he then attended the University of Scranton after earning the school’s prestigious St. Thomas More Scholarship. He would also go on to earn his Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law.
Upon graduation John began his private law practice based in Scranton. With his beloved Meghan working by his side, John truly loved his work and was a well-respected colleague to his fellow attorneys.
A man of simple pleasures, John enjoyed the tranquility and peace of living in the country. He loved his garden, especially cultivating his fruit trees, and he found great solitude while reading countless books. Certainly an outdoorsman, John enjoyed hiking and camping, especially through the Adirondack Mountains.
His wit and humor will never be forgotten nor will his humble demeanor which only personified his truly great character.
Along with Meghan, John is also survived by his loving sister, Penny Coury of Old Forge; and his mother-in-law, Ann (Gaven) Philbin of Scranton.
He was preceded in death by his parents John N. and Emily (Bushara) Coury.
A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Melkite Greek Catholic Church, 130 N. Francis Cabrini Ave., West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Christopher Manuele, Pastor. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
