Alexander (Al) Pritchyk, age 91, a longtime Old Forge resident and most recently of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday at Myrtle Beach Manor, after an illness. On January 21, 2012, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary (Sgobba) Pritchyk.
Born in Taylor on September 8, 1931, and son of the late John and Sadie (Virhanovsky) Pritchyk, Al was a football standout and graduate of Old Forge High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War prior to his honorable discharge from service. A lifelong mason, he specialized as a plaster man while working alongside his brother, John. The hardworking duo’s workload spanned from Old Forge to New Jersey. A devoted member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Old Forge, Al was a pillar of the church parish. He volunteered in countless capacities and he was a fixture on the church’s council, having served as past president for many years.
Possessing a tireless work ethic, Al worked at both Allied Services and at Summit Hills Golf Club following his “retirement.” He was a huge sports fan, loyal to the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Panthers and the Old Forge Blue Devils. A skilled tradesman, he also enjoyed woodworking. A man of faith who certainly adored his loved ones, his family finds comfort knowing he’s now reunited with his beloved wife.
He is survived by three children, Sandra Pritchyk of Berlin, Maryland, Sharon Shewczyk and husband David of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Michael Pritchyk and wife Diana of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Timothy and Nicholas Shewczyk and Nikolai and Alexander Pritchyk; siblings, John Pritchyk of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Sonia Buberniak of Uniondale; and nieces and nephews.
Siblings, Walter Pritchyk and Dorothy Petercuskie, also preceded him in death.
His family wishes to acknowledge and thank Al’s devoted caregiver, Paula Messineo, and the entire staffs of both Myrtle Beach Manor and ProMedica Hospice Care for their collective care and compassion.
Family and friends are invited to attend Al’s funeral, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Orthodox Church, 512 Summer St., Old Forge, officiated by the Rev. Michael Shephard. Interment with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow in the parish cemetery. Respects may be offered at the church on Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Al’s name to either St. Michael’s Church c/o 512 Summer St., Old Forge Pa. 18518, or to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church c/o 404 Maple St., Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
