Jerome J “Jerry” Calpin, a lifelong West Scranton resident passed away Sunday at the Green Ridge Care Center in Scranton after an extended illness. He was born in Scranton on September 24, 1942 and the son of the late Michael and Grace (Lyons) Calpin. Jerry attended West Scranton High School before serving his country in the U.S. Army. Prior to his retirement, Jerry was a firefighter for the Scranton Fire Department. A faithful Roman Catholic, Jerry was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Parish in West Scranton where he also served as a Mass Usher.

He was a longtime member and familiar face a the Taurus in Scranton. Jerry had a sweet tooth and never passed up a piece of candy. Grit TV just lost its best viewer as Jerry was the world’s biggest classic western movie fan. A quiet and humble man, Jerry will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving sister, Eleanor Gallagher of Scranton, sister-in-law, Marie Calpin of Scranton and many nieces and nephews, including his niece and caregiver, Ellen Kosar.

Jerry was preceded in death by twin brothers John and Michael Calpin, his brother Francis Calpin and sister Mary Jean Kramer.

His family would to acknowledge and thank both the Green Ridge Care Center Staff and also the Residential Palliative Care Team for taking great care of Jerry throughout his illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram Street, West Scranton to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s name to the St. Patrick’s Food Pantry c/o 1401 Jackson St., Scranton, PA. 18504. Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
