Dorothy Ann ‘Dottie’ (Dranchak) McGuire, age 89 of Avoca, died peacefully at home Saturday surrounded by her loving children.
Born on February 26, 1934, and raised in West Scranton, Dottie was the daughter of the late John J. and Rose (Barron) Dranchak, both from Scranton. She was a 1953 graduate of West Scranton High School where she was also a member of the WSHS marching band.
Dorothy worked numerous jobs over the years which include the former General Electric in Minooka, The Scranton Dry Goods, ACME Market (later Insalaco Market) in Clarks Summit and finally, Price Chopper Supermarket in Dunmore, before her well-deserved 2005 retirement.
She was a loving and caring mother to her children all of her life. They were fortunate to have such a devoted, generous and loving “Mommy” in their lives to care and comfort them. That comfort will be very much missed, especially at this time.
She was a very spiritual and devoted person and a lifelong animal lover. Wherever she lived she would feed wild birds, squirrels and a few stray cats. If it slipped her mind to feed the squirrels, they would remind her by friendly tapping on her kitchen window.
She is survived by her beloved children and caregivers who remained by her side throughout illness, Matthew McGuire and Doreen McGuire, both of Avoca, and Marilyn (McGuire) Waller of Scranton; her grandaughter, Marissa Verchuk of Dickson City; her niece, Diane Dranchak of OH; her nephew, John Dranchak of KS; a long time companion, Frank Kosovich; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Elizabeth “Betty” Dranchak in 1958 and Lawrence Dranchak in 2009; her stepmother, Catherine (Brasso) Dranchak in 1970; and her husband, Louis McGuire in 2001.
Private funeral services will be from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with burial to follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dottie’s name to the SPCA of Luzerne County c/o 524 E Main St, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
