Catherine “Kitty” Medina, 75, of Clarks Green, Pa. passed away on April 2, 2023 after an extended and brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was truly a kind and gentle soul whose life touched many and she will be missed by all that were privileged to know her.
Her father was the late Joseph Lubinski of Scranton and her mother was the late Agnes (Caswell) Lubinski, also of Scranton. She leaves behind her beloved husband Andrew Medina, a daughter Stephanie Medina of Philadelphia, a sister Nancy Lubinski of TN and a brother Joseph Lubinski of Scranton.
Raised and educated in Scranton, Kitty was a graduate of Marywood College and the University of Scranton. She taught grade school for 35 years in the Scranton School District, where she was famously known for telling each class of students that “Organization is the Key To Success.” In her retirement years, many former students would fondly remind her of that sage advice.
Besides teaching, she was an avid skier, golfer, bowler, bridge player and a member of the “Tuesday Girls” retired teachers group that enlivened many area establishments with their weekly gatherings. In addition, she could often be found out and about for dinner on Saturday evenings. We can still hear her singing New York, New York at the Sambuca Grill in Scranton.
Important to Kitty was her Catholic faith, and she was a recognized presence at 11am Sunday mass at St. Patrick’s parish. She sat in the first row wheelchair section, and many parishioners will remember being greeted by a friendly wave and her engaging smile as they entered church. She was the Greeting Angel.
Kitty was the embodiment of good. She will live on in our hearts and to her friends and family she would likely say “I gave you my love. You can only guess how much you gave me. I thank you for the love each of you have shown”
Her family will be forever grateful for the kindness, care and compassion bestowed to Kitty throughout her illness by family and dear friends, especially Kelsey Wargo, R.N., for her unfailing commitment to Kitty’s well-being.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 9:15 AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Ave., Scranton, with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Parish, 1403 Jackson Street, West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday between 4-7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kitty’s name to St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen c/o 500 Penn Ave, Scranton, PA 18503.
